PCFT Transporter Assay (SLC46A1)

The Proton-Coupled Folate Transporter, PCFT, is a proton-folate symporter that couples the uptake of folates to the flow of protons down an electrochemical gradient. PCFT is a member of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) of transporters; it functions optimally at acidic pH, and is primarily involved in the intestinal absorption of dietary folates. PCFT is expressed at high levels in the apical membranes of the duodenum and proximal jejunum, and at much lower levels in the rest of the intestine and colon. The protein is also expressed in other normal tissues, such as liver and kidney. PCFT can function in the absence of a transmembrane pH gradient; however, under these conditions, folate transport is driven by membrane potentials.
